Ready to Audition for the Mendelssohn Glee Club?

Ready to raise your voice with America's oldest independent men's chorus? The Mendelssohn Glee Club welcomes tenors and basses who share our passion for music and camaraderie. Here's everything you need to know about joining.

1. Who We're Looking For:

  • We welcome tenors and basses.

  • Experience Level:

    • While formal musical training is a plus, a good ear, a passion for singing, and a commitment to regular attendance are most important.

    • Many of our members have experience in choral groups, but we also welcome those looking to grow their musical abilities.

    • The ability to read music is helpful but not strictly required for the audition. We provide voice part audio files to assist in learning the music.

2. The Audition Process:

  • We typically welcome new members twice a year: at the start of our Fall semester (early September) and our Spring semester (early January).

  • What to Expect at the Audition:

    • Auditions are friendly and supportive, designed to help us understand your vocal placement and musicality.

    • You'll be asked to sing a selection of your choice

    • There may also be some basic vocal exercises, scales to test your range,  pitch matching, and perhaps some simple sight-reading (don't worry if sight-reading isn't your strongest skill – it's just one component!)."

    • The entire audition process typically takes less than 10-15 minutes.

3. Rehearsals:

  • Schedule: Rehearsals are held every Monday evening from 7:00 PM - 9:15 PN

  • Location: We rehearse at Broadway Spanish Iglesia Adventista del Séptimo Día 161 W 93rd St. New York, NY 10025

  • Our Fall semester typically runs from early September through early December, culminating in our Holiday Concert. Our Spring semester runs from early January through early May, concluding with our Spring Concert.

  • There is usually a 2-3 week break between semesters and we do not rehearse during the summer months.

4. Member Commitment & Expectations:

  • Consistent attendance at rehearsals is vital for the success of our performances and the cohesion of the club. We expect members to attend a minimum percentage of rehearsals of 80% for each concert cycle.

  • All dress rehearsals and performances are mandatory.

  • Dues & Costs:

    • The Mendelssohn Glee Club is a self-supporting non-profit organization. Annual membership dues contribute to the cost of music, professional staff (conductor, accompanist), rehearsal space, and concert production.

    • Details regarding current dues and payment options will be provided during the new member orientation.

    • Members are responsible for purchasing their own concert attire (Tails, blazer, and specific accessories for formal and less formal performances). Details will be provided.

    • Members purchase their concert binders as required.

Beyond the joy of singing, MGC offers unparalleled camaraderie, opportunities for musical growth, and the chance to contribute to a celebrated musical legacy. Forge lifelong friendships, perform inspiring repertoire, and experience the unique brotherhood of a historic Glee Club. Your voice could be the next to join our harmonious tradition. We look forward to welcoming you!
